Pit Boss Navigator 3-Series Vertical Review

A 50 lb hopper and a 130°F floor. If smoking is what you do, nothing else near this price competes — as long as you own something else for burgers.

Who this is for

Someone who already owns a grill and wants a dedicated smoker. Ribs, pork shoulder, sausage, jerky, big batches. The 50 lb hopper means you load it at the start of a weekend and stop thinking about fuel; the 130°F floor opens up jerky and sausage that no barrel pellet grill can reach.

Who it is not for

Anyone buying their only outdoor cooker. 420°F in a cabinet with no direct-flame path makes a gray burger and a disappointing steak. If this is your one grill, buy a barrel — under $1,000 has the options.

The 50 lb hopper changes how you cook

At roughly 1.25 lb an hour at smoking temperatures, 50 lb is about 40 hours. Compare that with Traeger’s 18 lb (about 14 hours) across almost their entire range.

Practically it means fuel stops being a consideration. You do not plan around the hopper, you do not set alarms, you do not check it. Nobody who moves from an 18 lb hopper to a 50 lb one calls it a minor upgrade.

Why 130°F matters

Nearly every barrel pellet grill has a 180°F floor. 130°F puts jerky (150-165°F), snack sticks and gentle sausage smoking within reach. If any of those are on your list, this specification alone decides the purchase — nothing in barrel format competes.

The honest downsides

  • It cannot grill. 420°F maximum, no direct flame.
  • Harder to clean than a barrel. Grease runs down the inside of a tall cabinet and five racks are five racks to scrub. An ash vacuum helps.
  • Rack spacing limits tall items. A whole turkey may not fit between shelves despite the generous total area. Check the rack gap against your tallest planned cook.
  • One probe for three ports.

Pit Boss states this model was named 2025 Best Vertical Smoker by Men’s Journal. That is their claim, reported as theirs and attributed to the publication that made the award.

Or step up

The Navigator 6-Series doubles the capacity to 2,224 square inches and the hopper to 75 lb, still under $1,000. If you cater, that is the one.

Weighted rubric score: 8.5/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 9.7/10.

What it does well

  • 50 lb hopper is the standout number here — a full load runs overnight and then some
  • Drops to 130°F, low enough for jerky, which barrel grills cannot reach
  • Heavy-gauge stainless body with a high-temp door seal and a viewing window
  • Named 2025 Best Vertical Smoker by Men's Journal (the maker's claim, cited as theirs)

Where it falls short

  • Tops out at 420°F — you cannot sear or grill on it
  • Vertical cabinets are harder to clean than a barrel
  • Rack spacing limits what you can stand upright

Questions people actually ask

Can you grill on the Pit Boss Navigator 3-Series?

No. It tops out at 420°F with no direct-flame path, so burgers come out gray. It is a smoker, which is what buys you the 50 lb hopper and the five racks.

How long does a 50 lb hopper last?

Around 40 hours at smoking temperatures. Practically, fuel stops being something you plan around.

Will a whole turkey fit?

Check the rack spacing before assuming so. Total cooking area is 1,118 sq in across five shelves, but the gap between racks limits how tall an item can be.

Can it make jerky?

Yes — the 130°F minimum is low enough, where most barrel pellet grills stop at 180°F. That is one of the main reasons to choose a cabinet.
