Camp Chef Pellet Grills: Worth the Premium?
Camp Chef sells one thing nobody else does: a pellet grill that also burns real wood chunks. That is the whole argument, and it is a good one.

The one reason to buy Camp Chef
The Woodwind Pro has a smoke box that burns actual wood chunks alongside the pellet fire. That directly addresses the single real limitation of pellet cooking — thin smoke above 250°F — and no Pit Boss, Traeger or Z Grills grill offers it at any price.
If you have cooked on a pellet grill and wished for more smoke flavor, this is the honest hardware fix rather than a workaround. Everything else Camp Chef offers — WiFi, Bluetooth, stainless construction, down-and-out ventilation, Sidekick attachments — is good but available in some form elsewhere.
What Camp Chef publishes, and what it does not
Camp Chef’s own Amazon listing for the Woodwind Pro WiFi 24 states almost no specifications: no total cooking area, no hopper capacity, no temperature range, no warranty length. We are not going to fill those gaps with numbers we cannot source. If any of them is decisive for you, check the retailer listing or Camp Chef’s own site before buying.
What the listing does state: WiFi and Bluetooth monitoring and control through the Camp Chef app, down-and-out ventilation for even heat and smoke through the chamber, stainless steel construction, and Sidekick compatibility.
The Sidekick is the other real differentiator
The Sidekick is a genuine gas burner that bolts to the side of the grill and accepts a griddle, a grill box, an artisan pizza oven or a stock pot. Unlike a cast iron plate heated by the pellet fire, it has its own independent heat source — so you can sear or griddle at full gas temperature while the main chamber holds 225°F.
It is the best engineering answer to the grill-plus-griddle question we cover in griddle combos. It is also sold separately, on top of an already expensive grill.
Camp Chef pellets are worth knowing about separately
Camp Chef’s own pellets are among the best-value premium bags on the market and work in any brand’s grill. They are kiln-dried to a low moisture content, which means a hotter, cleaner burn and noticeably less ash — and that matters more on grills with small burn pots. Their Competition Blend and Orchard Apple are both 20 lb bags at prices that undercut Traeger’s 18 lb. See our pellet rankings.
Should you buy one?
Buy the Woodwind Pro if smoke flavor is the thing you care most about and the budget is available. It is the most expensive cooker we cover and the value case against a Pit Boss Navigator is poor on paper — but paper does not measure smoke.
Do not buy it as a value purchase, and do not buy it expecting the specification transparency you get from Pit Boss or Z Grills. For a cheaper route to more smoke on any grill, a smoke tube costs single-digit dollars and gets you a meaningful part of the way.

How it scores
Weighted rubric score: 7.4/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 8.7/10.
What it does well
- The smoke box burns actual wood chunks alongside the pellets — no other cooker here does this
- Down-and-out ventilation pulls smoke across the food rather than straight up the chimney
- Stainless construction, WiFi and Bluetooth
- Sidekick compatible, so a gas griddle or pizza oven bolts to the side
Where it falls short
- Camp Chef has discontinued the 24-inch model: it is gone from campchef.com and has no buyable Amazon offer as of 2026-11-06
- Camp Chef publishes almost no specifications for it — no cooking area, no hopper capacity, no temperature range
- The Woodwind Pro line continues only in the 36-inch size, at a higher price
The picks in full
#1 · All-round use with minimal ash
Camp Chef Competition Blend
Camp Chef

- 20 lb bag
- 100% virgin hardwoods, no oils, chemicals or binders

Price as of November 7, 2026. #ad how this is funded
Good
- Kiln-drying means fewer pellets burned to hold temperature
- Safe in all pellet grills
Trade-off
- Nothing distinctive about the flavor versus other maple-hickory-cherry blends
#2 · Cheap apple smoke
Camp Chef Orchard Apple
Camp Chef

Budget fruitwood that works in any brand's hopper, including Traeger and Green Mountain.
- 100% all-natural hardwood, food grade
- 20 lb bag
- Ultra-low moisture, no added oils or flavors
- Made in the USA
Price as of November 7, 2026. #ad how this is funded
Good
- One of the cheapest fruitwoods per pound
- Explicitly rated for other brands' grills
Trade-off
- Camp Chef calls it a blend, so expect milder apple than a pure bag
#3 · More smoke flavor without changing grills
12 in Stainless Smoke Tube
Generic

Single-digit dollars to add real smoke at low temperatures — the cheapest way to make any pellet grill smokier.
- 12 in stainless tube
- Fills with pellets and smolders alongside the cook
Price as of November 7, 2026. #ad how this is funded
Good
- Fixes the one genuine weakness of pellet grills: thin smoke above 250°F
- Lets you run a second wood flavor
Trade-off
- Needs lighting with a torch
- Burns about four hours per fill

Questions people actually ask
What is the best Camp Chef pellet grill?
The Woodwind Pro WiFi 24 is the model we cover and the one with the chunk-wood smoke box, which is the brand’s genuine differentiator.
Is a Camp Chef worth the money?
Only for the smoke. On cooking area per dollar it loses badly to Pit Boss. If the smoke box and the Sidekick appeal and the budget is there, it is the best-flavoring pellet grill we cover. If you are optimizing for value, it is not the right purchase.
What is a Camp Chef Sidekick?
A gas burner attachment that bolts to the side of the grill and takes a griddle, grill box, pizza oven or stock pot. It has its own heat source, so it works independently of the pellet chamber. It is sold separately.
Are Camp Chef pellets good?
Yes, and they are good value. Kiln-dried virgin hardwood with no oils, chemicals or binders, in 20 lb bags that undercut Traeger’s 18 lb. They work in any brand of pellet grill.
