The WiFIRE question
This is the whole comparison. The Pro 22 has no connectivity at all, which means buying a Traeger and not getting the thing Traeger is best at. If you are paying a Traeger premium, paying it for a grill without the app is the one combination that makes least sense.
The counter-argument is real too: at the Pro 22’s price, the Z Grills 7002C gives you 125 more square inches, a 28 lb hopper instead of 18, a PID board, two probes and a cover. The Pro 22’s advantages are build finish, the accessory ecosystem and resale value.
450°F vs 500°F
Fifty degrees sounds minor and is not, on a grill with no direct-flame path. At 450°F indirect, a steak browns slowly and the crust is weak. At 500°F it is noticeably better, though still behind a Pit Boss with a sear slider.
Either way, if steak matters, sear grates are the honest fix on both.
Our call
The Pro 780, if you are set on Traeger. The Pro 22 is a decent grill in a tough spot: it costs Traeger money without the Traeger feature, and value shoppers at that price are better served elsewhere. The middle path is the Westwood, which is the cheapest Traeger that actually has WiFIRE.

How it scores
Weighted rubric score: 7.7/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 9/10.

- 18 lb hopper with a cleanout at a sub-$600 price
- Sawhorse chassis and side lift bar — easier to move than its weight suggests

Where it falls short
- +/-15°F is a real swing; the PID boards on cheaper Z Grills hold tighter
- 450°F max, so searing is weak
- No WiFi, which is most of why people buy Traeger in the first place
