Are Pellet Grills Allowed in Apartments?
Often not, and the reason catches people out: a pellet grill is an open-flame appliance regardless of the fact that it plugs in.

The direct answer
Frequently not. Many leases and local fire codes prohibit open-flame cooking on balconies regardless of fuel type, and a pellet grill is an open-flame appliance — the fact that it needs a wall outlet does not make it electric in the sense those rules mean. Check before you buy, not after.
We are not able to tell you what the rules are where you live. Fire codes are local, leases are individual, and HOA rules vary building to building. What this page does is tell you exactly what to check and who to ask.
The three documents that decide it
1. Your lease
Look for a clause about grills, barbecues or open flames on balconies and patios. Many leases prohibit them outright; some permit electric grills only. A pellet grill is not an electric grill in that sense — it burns wood.
2. Your local fire code
Many US jurisdictions have adopted fire-code provisions restricting open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies of multi-family buildings, typically with distance requirements from the structure. These are municipal rather than national, so the specifics depend entirely on where you are.
The practical step: call your local fire marshal’s office or search your city’s fire code for “open flame cooking balcony”. They answer this question regularly.
3. Your HOA or building rules
Separate from the lease and often stricter. Buildings that have had a balcony fire tend to have very firm rules afterwards.
Why “it is electric” does not work
This is the misunderstanding that gets people into trouble. A pellet grill needs mains power for its auger, fan and igniter — but the heat comes entirely from burning wood pellets in a burn pot, with visible flame.
When a lease or fire code says “electric grills only”, it means an appliance where the heating element is electric and there is no combustion. That is a true electric smoker or an electric grill — not a pellet grill.
Note also that several manufacturers market pellet grills as “electric pellet grills”, which actively muddies this. Z Grills does it on several listings. It does not change what the appliance is.
If the answer is no, the real options
| Option | Works? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| A true electric smoker | Often yes | No combustion, no flame. Check your specific rules |
| A building or complex grill area | Often yes | Many apartment complexes have a shared patio with grills |
| A friend's or family yard | Yes | A portable pellet grill travels — see our portable picks |
| An indoor electric smoker or smoking gun | Yes | Different results, but genuinely usable indoors |
| A pellet grill on a ground-floor patio | Sometimes | Ground-floor non-combustible patios are often treated differently |
| Doing it anyway | No | Fire risk, lease breach, and insurance will not cover it |
If the answer is yes, buy small
Where a balcony pellet grill is permitted, the constraint becomes size and clearance. Two of our picks suit:
- Z Grills 200A — 25 x 20 x 13 inches, 202 square inches, PID control, 8 lb hopper. The smallest complete pellet cooker we recommend.
- Cuisinart portable — 24 x 18 x 15 inches, 40 lb, 256 square inches, reaches 500°F with a locking lid.
Both need a wall outlet. Keep whatever clearance from the building your rules specify, never cook under an overhang or soffit, and have a fire extinguisher to hand. See best small pellet grills.
The smoke question
Even where it is legal, consider your neighbors. A pellet grill running at 225°F for twelve hours puts smoke across a shared balcony space for a whole day. That is a different proposition from twenty minutes of burgers, and it is the kind of thing that turns into a complaint and then into a rule change for the whole building.

Questions people actually ask
Are pellet grills allowed in apartments?
Frequently not. Many leases and local fire codes prohibit open-flame cooking on balconies regardless of fuel, and a pellet grill is an open-flame appliance. Check your lease, your local fire code and your building rules before buying.
Can you have a pellet grill at an apartment?
Sometimes — on a ground-floor non-combustible patio, or in a complex with a designated grill area. On an upper-floor balcony it is often prohibited. The answer depends entirely on local rules.
Does a pellet grill count as an electric grill?
No. It needs mains power for the auger, fan and igniter, but the heat comes from burning wood with visible flame. Rules permitting “electric grills only” mean appliances with no combustion.
What can I use instead if pellet grills are banned?
A true electric smoker has no combustion and is often permitted where pellet grills are not. A shared complex grill area, or a portable pellet grill you take elsewhere, are the other routes.
