Small by footprint, not by cooking area
Most “small pellet grill” lists are really portable-grill lists. The two are different: a portable grill folds or carries, while a small grill simply takes up less patio. If your constraint is space rather than transport, the Z Grills 450E’s 459 square inches in a compact body is a better answer than any tabletop.
The published dimensions
Footprint is the specification manufacturers are least consistent about publishing. Where we have a figure from the maker, it is here. Where we do not, we say so rather than estimating.
| Grill | Published dimensions | Cooking area | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Z Grills 200A | 25 x 20 x 13 in | 202 sq in | Tabletop |
| Cuisinart portable | 24 x 18 x 15 in, 40 lb | 256 sq in (188 + 68) | Portable, locking lid |
| Pit Boss 150 | Not stated | 256 sq in | Portable, 12V DC |
| Z Grills 450E | Not stated | 459 sq in | Compact cart |
| Traeger Ranger | Not stated | Not stated | Tabletop + griddle |
Traeger does not publish a cooking-area figure for the Ranger on its Amazon listing and we will not invent one. If exact capacity matters to your decision, check the dimensions on the retailer listing before you buy.
The sizing arithmetic
Roughly 100 square inches per person for mixed grilling, or one rack of ribs per 150 square inches. Which gives:
- 202 sq in — two people, or one rack of ribs plus sides.
- 256 sq in — two to three people. Pit Boss quotes about 13 burgers.
- 459 sq in — four people comfortably, three rib racks.
- 518-572 sq in — four to five people. This is where a small grill stops being a constraint.
Balconies: check before you buy
A pellet grill produces smoke and an open flame, and a great many apartment leases and local fire codes prohibit both on a balcony regardless of fuel type. The grill being electric-ignition does not exempt it. Check your lease and your municipal code first — we go through what to look for in pellet grills in apartments.

- Runs on the included AC adapter, or an optional 12V 5Ah lithium battery

How it scores
Weighted rubric score: 7.9/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 9.1/10.
What it does well
- Full-size 518 sq in chamber for close to what a portable costs
- Flame Broiler lever opens direct flame for searing up to 1,000°F — rare at this price
- Five-year warranty is unusually long for a budget grill
Where it falls short
- 5 lb hopper is the real compromise: expect to refill on any long smoke
- No connectivity at all
- Thin-gauge body loses heat in cold weather, so winter cooks run longer
#5 · Portable searing and camping

Questions people actually ask
What is the best small pellet grill?
The Z Grills 450E if you want a compact cart grill with real capacity (459 sq in), or the Z Grills 200A tabletop if your space is genuinely tiny — 25 x 20 x 13 inches with a full PID controller.
How small can a pellet grill be and still smoke properly?
Small chambers smoke fine; the limitation is hopper capacity, not size. The 200A’s 8 lb hopper runs about ten hours at smoking temperatures, which covers most cooks.
Can I use a pellet grill on a balcony?
Often not — many leases and fire codes ban open-flame cooking on balconies whatever the fuel. Check both before you buy. Details: apartment and balcony rules.
