Are pellet grills worth it?
Yes, if you want to smoke food and value set-and-forget convenience — a pellet grill holds 225°F for twelve hours unattended, which nothing else does without skill or electricity. No, if you only cook burgers on weeknights: gas is faster and sears better, and a pellet grill will feel like a downgrade.
Who should buy one
- Anyone who wants to make barbecue. Ribs, pork shoulder, brisket, smoked chicken. This is the thing pellet grills exist for and they do it with far less skill required than charcoal or an offset.
- People who want wood flavor without fire management. You set a number. That is the whole operation.
- Anyone who wants one cooker for many jobs. Pellet grills genuinely grill, smoke, bake, roast and braise — they are outdoor convection ovens.
- People with a job. You can start a pork shoulder at 10 p.m. and go to bed. An offset cannot do that.
Who should not
1. If weeknight speed is your priority
A pellet grill needs 10-15 minutes to come up to temperature. A gas grill needs under five. On a Tuesday with hungry children that gap decides the evening, and no amount of flavor compensates. See pellet vs gas.
2. If steak crust is what you care about most
Pellet grills are convection cookers. Even at 500°F the browning is slower than radiant heat from charcoal or gas burners. A Pit Boss with a direct-flame slider narrows the gap and does not close it.
3. If you have nowhere to put it or no outlet
Every pellet grill needs mains power (or 12V DC on one portable). They are also physically large, and they need a cover and somewhere dry for pellets. If your cooking space is a small balcony with no socket, this is not the right category.
The real costs, laid out
| Item | Why you need it | Scale of cost |
|---|---|---|
| The grill | Obvious | The main spend |
| Pellets | 1-3 lb per hour of cooking | A 40 lb bag covers several long cooks |
| A cover | Weather kills pellet grills | Small |
| A sealed pellet container | Damp pellets jam augers | Small |
| A thermometer | The built-in probe reads one spot | Small to moderate |
| Grease liners | Cleanup, and grease is a fire risk | Trivial |
| Electricity | Auger, fan, igniter | Negligible — see below |
The electricity is the cost people most overestimate. A pellet grill draws a few hundred watts during ignition and far less while running. We work through it in electricity cost, and the short version is that it is not a factor in the decision.
The honest limitations
Less smoke than an offset
A pellet grill burns efficiently, and efficiency means less smoke. Above about 250°F the smoke output drops noticeably. This is the single most common disappointment among new owners, and it is physics, not a defect.
Fixes: cook at 225°F rather than 275°F, add a smoke tube for a few dollars, use a stronger wood. All three help. None makes a pellet grill into an offset. See pellet vs offset.
It depends on electricity
A power cut mid-cook stops the auger and the fan. The fire goes out, the chamber cools, and you have a half-cooked brisket. Rare, but worth knowing.
There are parts that fail
Auger motor, induction fan, igniter. All three are replaceable and inexpensive on every brand we cover, but a charcoal kettle has none of them. See how long pellet grills last.
Damp pellets will cause you problems
Not the grill’s fault, but the most common first-year complaint. Pellets absorb moisture, crumble, and jam the auger. A sealed container prevents it entirely. See how to store wood pellets.
Do pellet grills take longer to cook?
For grilling, yes — the warm-up is longer and the ceiling is lower, so burgers take a few minutes more. For smoking, no: a brisket takes twelve hours on any cooker, and the pellet grill is the one that does not need you present for them.
What it costs to find out
This is the part that changes the answer in 2026. Five years ago a pellet grill with proper temperature control cost real money. Today a Z Grills 600D2 has a PID controller and 572 square inches for under $400, and a Pit Boss 500 FB2 gets you a full-size barrel with direct-flame searing for less again.
At that price the question is less “is it worth it” and more “is it worth finding out”. If you have ever wanted to make your own ribs, the answer is probably yes.

Where it falls short
- 5 lb hopper is the real compromise: expect to refill on any long smoke
- No connectivity at all
- Thin-gauge body loses heat in cold weather, so winter cooks run longer

Questions people actually ask
Are pellet smokers worth it?
If you want to make barbecue with minimal skill and minimal attention, yes — nothing else holds 225°F for twelve hours unattended. If you only grill quickly on weeknights, gas is the better tool.
Are pellet grills the best?
Best at convenience and versatility; not best at searing (gas and charcoal win) or smoke volume (an offset wins). They are the best compromise, which is why they outsell both.
Are pellet smokers healthy?
Pellet grills burn food-grade hardwood with no additives, and cooking indirectly at low temperatures produces less charring than searing over flame. We are not going to make health claims beyond that — it is cooking over wood smoke, with whatever that implies, and we are not qualified to say more.
Do pellet grills take longer to cook?
For grilling, slightly — longer warm-up and a lower ceiling. For smoking, no: a brisket takes twelve hours on any cooker, and this is the one that does not need you watching it.
What are pellet grills good for?
Low-and-slow barbecue above all, plus roasting, baking and general grilling. They are outdoor convection ovens that burn wood, which makes them unusually versatile.
How much does it cost to run a pellet grill?
Pellets are the main cost at roughly 1-3 lb per hour depending on temperature. Electricity is negligible. Full arithmetic in running costs per cook.
