Pellet Smoker vs Electric Smoker
This is the least ambiguous comparison on the site. An electric smoker is cheaper and simpler; a pellet grill does genuinely more, with real wood smoke.

How each one actually works
A pellet grill burns hardwood pellets in a burn pot — the wood is the heat source, so smoke is a by-product of cooking. An electric smoker heats with a resistance element and smolders wood chips in a separate tray, so smoke is an add-on that stops when the chips are consumed.
That mechanical difference explains every other difference between them.
| Pellet grill | Electric smoker | Winner | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat source | Burning hardwood pellets | Electric element | — |
| Smoke | Continuous, from the fuel itself | From a chip tray, needs refilling | Pellet |
| Maximum temperature | 450-500°F | Typically 275-325°F | Pellet |
| Can it grill? | Yes | No | Pellet |
| Minimum temperature | 180°F barrels, 130°F cabinets | Often as low as 100°F | Electric |
| Up-front cost | From around $330 | Often under $300 | Electric |
| Running cost | Pellets plus small electricity draw | Electricity only | Electric |
| Set-and-forget | Yes | Yes | Even |
| Cold-weather performance | Varies with insulation | Poor — elements struggle | Pellet |
| Versatility | Grill, smoke, bake, roast, braise, sear | Smoke only | Pellet |
The smoke difference is the main point
An electric smoker’s chip tray produces a modest amount of smoke for as long as the chips last, then nothing until you refill it — which usually means opening the smoker and losing heat. A pellet grill produces smoke continuously for as long as it is burning, because the smoke comes from the fuel.
In practice that means a pellet grill puts more wood flavor into a long cook with less intervention. Electric smoker owners who want more smoke end up buying a smoke tube — which is, revealingly, the same accessory pellet owners buy, lit the same way, burning the same pellets.
Where the electric smoker genuinely wins
Price, at the very bottom
You can buy an electric smoker for less than the cheapest pellet grill we would recommend. If your absolute ceiling is under $300 and you only want to smoke, that is a legitimate reason.
Very low temperatures
Many electrics go down to around 100°F, which is below even the 130°F floor on Pit Boss’s vertical cabinets. For cold-smoking cheese or fish, an electric has the edge.
Simplicity
No auger, no fan, no igniter, no burn pot. Fewer moving parts means fewer failure points. The three parts that fail on a pellet grill mostly do not exist on an electric.
Why we still say buy the pellet grill
Because the price gap has narrowed and the capability gap has not. A Z Grills 550B2 has 553 square inches, PID temperature control and a 450°F ceiling, which means it will smoke ribs and cook burgers. An electric smoker at similar money will do the first and not the second.
If you are buying one outdoor cooker, buying the one that cannot grill is a decision you will regret by the second summer.

How it scores
Weighted rubric score: 8.5/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 9.7/10.
What it does well
- 50 lb hopper is the standout number here — a full load runs overnight and then some
- Drops to 130°F, low enough for jerky, which barrel grills cannot reach
- Heavy-gauge stainless body with a high-temp door seal and a viewing window
- Named 2025 Best Vertical Smoker by Men's Journal (the maker's claim, cited as theirs)
Where it falls short
- Tops out at 420°F — you cannot sear or grill on it
- Vertical cabinets are harder to clean than a barrel
- Rack spacing limits what you can stand upright

Questions people actually ask
Is a pellet smoker better than an electric smoker?
Yes, for almost everyone. A pellet grill makes continuous wood smoke from its own fuel, reaches grilling temperatures and does several other jobs. An electric smoker is cheaper and simpler but smokes only, with less smoke.
Do electric smokers make real smoke?
Yes, but less of it and not continuously — the wood chips in the tray burn out and need refilling, which usually means opening the smoker and losing heat.
Can you grill on an electric smoker?
Not meaningfully. Most top out around 275-325°F, which is roasting rather than grilling heat, and there is no direct flame.
Which is cheaper to run?
The electric smoker, because electricity is its only fuel. A pellet grill burns pellets plus a small electricity draw for the auger and fan — see electricity cost.
