What Size Pellet Grill Do I Need?
Roughly 100 square inches per person — but the number most people get wrong is not the size they need, it is the size they think they need.

The sizing table
Budget roughly 100 square inches per person for mixed grilling, or 150 square inches per rack of ribs. Four people are comfortable on 450-570 square inches; eight or more want 900 square inches or a vertical cabinet.
| People | Square inches needed | Example model | Also handles |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-3 | 200-300 sq in | Z Grills 200A tabletop | 1 rack of ribs + sides |
| 4 | 450-520 sq in | Z Grills 450E / Pit Boss 500 FB2 | 3 rib racks, 2 chickens |
| 5 | 550-600 sq in | Z Grills 550B2 / 600D2 | 4-5 rib racks, 4 chickens |
| 6-7 | 700-780 sq in | Z Grills 7002C / Pit Boss 700 Carbon | 6 rib racks, 5 chickens |
| 8-9 | 900-970 sq in | Pit Boss Navigator 850 / Traeger Woodridge Pro | 7-8 rib racks, 6-7 chickens |
| 10-13 | 1,300+ sq in | Pit Boss Navigator 1300 | 10 rib racks, 9 chickens |
| Batch smoking any number | Vertical cabinet | Pit Boss Navigator 3-Series (1,118 sq in / 5 racks) | Flat racks, 50 lb hopper |
Those food counts are extrapolated from the per-square-inch ratios Pit Boss, Traeger and Z Grills publish for their own grills, not measured by us. Actual capacity depends on how you arrange things and whether you use the upper tier.
Size for your normal cook, not your biggest one
This is the advice that saves people money and almost nobody gives, because it argues for buying less.
A bigger chamber costs more to heat every time you use it. More volume and more surface area mean a longer warm-up and more pellets burned to hold temperature. Cooking two chicken breasts on a 1,329 square inch grill uses close to the fuel of a full cook.
So if your normal cook is dinner for four and your big cook is a party twice a year, buy for four. A grill you fire up weekly beats one you think twice about, and for the two parties you cook in two batches or borrow a second cooker. Full arithmetic: running costs per cook.
Two tiers are not two grills
Most barrel grills quote a total that includes an upper rack. On a Pit Boss Navigator 850, that is 582 square inches on the main grate and 350 on the upper.
The upper rack is genuinely useful — for holding finished food warm, for smoking sausages, for ribs if you do not need to sauce them. It is not equivalent to main-grate space, because it runs hotter, it is harder to reach, and you cannot sear on it.
When sizing, weight the main grate more heavily than the headline number does.
The vertical cabinet shortcut
If what you actually need is volume for smoking rather than grate for grilling, a vertical cabinet is dramatically better value per rack. A Navigator 3-Series gives you 1,118 square inches across five flat shelves and a 50 lb hopper for the price of a 700 square inch barrel.
The catch is that it cannot grill — 420°F with no direct flame. So it is a second cooker, or a dedicated smoker for someone who already owns a gas grill. See vertical pellet smokers.
Hopper size scales with chamber size — check the ratio
A detail worth knowing: Pit Boss fits the same 30 lb hopper to the 932, 1,329 and 1,593 square inch Navigator barrels. The bigger the chamber, the faster that hopper empties.
So “it has a 30 lb hopper” means something different on each. If you buy big, budget for watching the hopper more closely, or pick a model where the ratio is comfortable.

- Flame Broiler slider gives you direct-flame searing, which most pellet grills in this range cannot do
- Two probes in the box rather than one
Where it falls short
- LCD controller is a step below the touchscreen PID on the 1300/1600 and the Advantage 850SL

#4 · Big families and anyone cooking for a crowd

Pit Boss · score 9.7/10

1,329 sq in and a touchscreen PID board for about what a mid-size Traeger costs — the value pick for big cooks.

How it scores
Weighted rubric score: 8.5/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 9.7/10.
What it does well
- 1,329 sq in holds four pork butts or eight rib racks without stacking
- Touchscreen controller rather than the LCD board on the 850
- Still cheaper than a Traeger Woodridge with 470 fewer square inches
- Folding front and side shelves plus a bottom pellet shelf
Where it falls short
- A 30 lb hopper feeding a 1,329 sq in chamber burns through pellets faster than the same hopper on the 850
- Big footprint — measure your patio before you order
- App reliability is the same known weak point across the Pit Boss range

Questions people actually ask
What size pellet grill do I need for a family of four?
450-570 square inches. A Z Grills 450E, 550B2 or 600D2, or a Pit Boss 500 FB2, all land in that range and will handle three to five racks of ribs.
What is the best small pellet grill?
The Z Grills 450E if you want a compact cart grill with 459 square inches, or the 200A tabletop at 202 square inches if space is genuinely tight. See best small pellet grills.
How many square inches do I need for ribs?
Roughly 150 square inches per rack laid flat. Rib racks that stand them upright let you fit more into the same space, at the cost of less even cooking.
Is a bigger pellet grill better?
Not automatically. A bigger chamber takes longer to heat and burns more pellets to hold temperature, on every cook. Buy for your normal cook rather than your biggest one.
Does the upper rack count as cooking area?
It is included in the headline figure and it is genuinely useful — warming, sausages, unsauced ribs — but it runs hotter and you cannot sear on it. Weight the main grate more heavily when sizing.
