Grease Liners and Drip Trays

The cheapest accessory on this site and the one that saves the most unpleasant job. Also a genuine safety item, which is the part people miss.

Why this is a safety page, not just a convenience one

Accumulated grease in a pellet grill is a fire risk. Grease pools in the drip tray and the bucket, and if it reaches the burn pot area or ignites during a high-temperature cook you have a grease fire inside a sealed chamber. Liners make emptying it trivial, which means it actually gets emptied.

That is the honest reason to care about a few dollars of foil. The convenience is real too — scraping baked-on grease off a steel pan is the worst job in pellet grilling — but the safety case is the one that should settle it.

The three types

Which liner does what.
TypeWhat it linesFit
Grease pan linersThe angled drip tray under the gratesModel-specific (Pit Boss sells six-packs for theirs)
Bucket linersThe bucket that catches runoff from the trayMostly universal; check the bucket diameter
Foil cup linersGeneric grease cupsPublished dimensions — measure your cup first
Under-grill matThe deck or patio under the whole grillSize to your grill footprint

Model-specific or generic?

For the drip tray, model-specific is worth it. The tray is angled and shaped; a generic sheet will not sit properly and grease will find its way underneath, which defeats the point. Pit Boss sells six-packs sized to their pans.

For the bucket, generic is fine — one of our picks bundles a replacement bucket with 20 liners, which is useful if the original went missing or got cooked.

For generic grease cups, the Rixordd 30-pack publishes its dimensions (11.0 x 7.1 x 2.5 in), which is the only way to buy generic liners with confidence. Measure your cup before ordering.

The under-grill mat

Not a liner, but the same category of problem. Grease escapes — from the bucket, from the tray seam, from a spill while carrying a pan — and it stains pavers and ruins deck finish permanently.

A 48 x 30 inch mat covers most barrel grills. It is cheaper than refinishing a deck by a very wide margin, and it rolls up for storage. Note that 48 x 30 will not cover the largest cabinet grills — measure your footprint.

The maintenance routine

  1. Every two or three cooks: lift the tray liner out, bin it, drop a new one in. Empty the bucket.
  2. After any high-fat cook (pork shoulder, brisket, bacon): do it the same day. This is the cook that fills a bucket.
  3. Before any high-temperature cook: check the tray. Searing over a pan of accumulated grease is how grease fires start.

Full routine: how to clean a pellet grill.

One claim we will not make: that liners are fireproof. They are disposable foil. They make emptying easy, which is what prevents accumulation — but a liner full of grease under a 450°F cook is still grease under a 450°F cook. Empty it.

Questions people actually ask

Are pellet grill drip tray liners worth it?

Yes — they are the cheapest accessory here and they turn the worst cleaning job into a lift-and-bin. They also mean grease actually gets emptied, which matters because accumulated grease is a fire risk.

Can I use regular aluminum foil instead?

You can line a tray with heavy-duty foil, but it tears when you lift it and grease finds the gaps. Pre-formed liners cost very little and actually hold the grease.

How often should I change the grease liner?

Every two or three cooks, and the same day after any high-fat cook like pork shoulder or brisket. Always check before a high-temperature cook.

Do I need an under-grill mat?

If the grill sits on a wooden deck or pavers, yes — escaped grease stains both permanently and a mat costs a tiny fraction of refinishing either.
