Be honest about diminishing returns first

A $1,400 pellet grill does not cook better barbecue than a $400 one. It cooks the same barbecue with less effort, more consistency in bad weather, and better materials. If your budget is this high, the genuinely useful question is whether to spend it all on the grill.

We will say that plainly even though it costs us: for most people, buying a Navigator 850 at under $1,000 and spending the remainder on good pellets, a cover, a proper thermometer, sear grates and a pellet bin produces a better overall setup than putting every dollar into the cooker. The exceptions are real, and they are what this page is about.

The three reasons to spend $1,400 on a pellet grill

1. Chunk-wood smoke — Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24

The Woodwind Pro has a smoke box that burns actual wood chunks alongside the pellet fire. No Pit Boss, Traeger or Z Grills grill on this site can do that, and it addresses the single real limitation of the pellet format: smoke output above 250°F. If you have cooked on a pellet grill and wished for more smoke flavor, this is the honest fix rather than a workaround.

It also has down-and-out ventilation for more even heat, stainless construction, WiFi and Bluetooth, and Sidekick compatibility for a griddle or pizza oven attachment. The caveats: it is the most expensive grill we cover, the Sidekick that makes it versatile is sold separately, and Camp Chef publishes almost no specifications on its own Amazon listing — no cooking area, no hopper capacity, no temperature range. We will not fill those gaps with numbers we cannot source.

2. Insulation — Traeger Ironwood 885

Double-wall insulation throughout, a D2 drivetrain that spins up faster and holds tighter than the Pro-series board, Super Smoke mode, and a 165°F minimum. If you cook through a real winter, insulation is the feature that stops the grill fighting the weather. If your season is May to September, you are paying for something you will not use.

3. Convenience at scale — Traeger Woodridge Pro

970 square inches, Super Smoke, a folding side shelf, the EZ-Clean keg, and the feature owners actually mention: a digital pellet sensor that warns you before the hopper empties. On an 18 lb hopper running a long cook, that is worth more than it sounds.

The value play in this tier

If you want to spend close to $1,200 and get the most grill for it, the Pit Boss Navigator 1600 is the answer: 1,593 square inches, a touchscreen controller, WiFi and a 30 lb hopper. It is a lot of cooker.

Two honest caveats. Pit Boss’s own listing states 1,593 square inches in the title and 1,539 in a feature bullet, so treat the figure as approximate until they correct it. And a 30 lb hopper feeding a chamber that size is proportionally tighter than the same hopper on the 850 — a long cook in cold weather will test it.

The insulation, smoke-box and sensor claims above are the manufacturers’ published specifications, cited below. The reasoning about what those specifications mean in practice is ours, and where owners report consistently on the result we say so and attribute it to them.

Capacity×0.158
Support×0.17.8

Weighted rubric score: 7.4/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 8.7/10.

What it does well

  • The smoke box burns actual wood chunks alongside the pellets — no other cooker here does this
  • Down-and-out ventilation pulls smoke across the food rather than straight up the chimney
  • Stainless construction, WiFi and Bluetooth
  • Sidekick compatible, so a gas griddle or pizza oven bolts to the side

Where it falls short

  • Camp Chef has discontinued the 24-inch model: it is gone from campchef.com and has no buyable Amazon offer as of 2026-11-06
  • Camp Chef publishes almost no specifications for it — no cooking area, no hopper capacity, no temperature range
  • The Woodwind Pro line continues only in the 36-inch size, at a higher price

#2 · Cold-weather cooking and tight temperature holds

Weighted rubric score: 8/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 9.2/10.

What it does well

  • Double-wall insulation keeps it steady in winter, where thin-bodied grills struggle
  • D2 drivetrain spins up faster and holds tighter than the Pro-series board
  • Drops to 165°F for genuine low-and-slow

Where it falls short

  • The most expensive grill per square inch on this site
  • Insulation only pays off if you actually cook below about 40°F
  • 885 sq in is less than a Woodridge Pro that costs less

#3 · Long smokes where running out of pellets is the real risk

What it does well

  • Digital pellet sensor warns you before the hopper empties — the single most useful upgrade in the range
  • Super Smoke genuinely increases smoke output at low temperatures
  • 970 sq in and a folding side shelf

Where it falls short

  • Pit Boss gives you more than 1,300 sq in for less money
  • Still an 18 lb hopper, sensor or not
  • Side shelf, not a storage cabinet — that is the Pro Plus

#4 · Competition-volume cooks and very large yards

Weighted rubric score: 8.4/10. Value carries the most weight on this site by design. On our published scale that is 9.6/10.

What it does well

  • More grate area than anything else at this price, by a wide margin
  • Touchscreen PID-style board and dual probes as standard
  • Flame Broiler searing carried over from the smaller models

Where it falls short

  • Pit Boss's own listing gives two different cooking areas — treat the figure as approximate until they fix it
  • 30 lb hopper is undersized for a chamber this big on a long cook
  • Heats slowly from cold compared with the 850

  • Touchscreen controller rather than the LCD board on the 850
  • Still cheaper than a Traeger Woodridge with 470 fewer square inches
  • Folding front and side shelves plus a bottom pellet shelf

Where it falls short

  • A 30 lb hopper feeding a 1,329 sq in chamber burns through pellets faster than the same hopper on the 850
  • Big footprint — measure your patio before you order
  • App reliability is the same known weak point across the Pit Boss range

Questions people actually ask

Is a $1,400 pellet grill worth it over a $400 one?

For convenience, cold-weather performance and build quality, yes. For the quality of the food, no — a well-run Z Grills 600D2 and a Traeger Ironwood both hold 225°F and both make good ribs. Spend the extra only if one of the three reasons on this page applies to you.

What is the best pellet grill for smoke flavor?

The Camp Chef Woodwind Pro 24, because its smoke box burns real wood chunks rather than relying on pellets alone. A much cheaper partial fix on any grill is a smoke tube — see the accessories page.

Do I need an insulated pellet grill?

Only if you cook below roughly 40°F with any regularity. Insulation cuts pellet consumption and keeps the controller from struggling. In warm weather it does very little, and a thermal blanket is a much cheaper answer for the odd cold week.

What is the biggest pellet grill under $1,500?

Among barrel grills, the Pit Boss Navigator 1600 at roughly 1,593 sq in. If you count vertical cabinets, the Navigator 6-Series offers 2,224 sq in for considerably less — see best large pellet grills.
