The twenty most common questions
Are pellet grills worth it?
Yes if you want to smoke food and value set-and-forget convenience — a pellet grill holds 225°F for twelve hours unattended, which nothing else does without skill. No if you only cook burgers on weeknights: gas is faster and sears better. Full answer: are pellet grills worth it.
What size pellet grill do I need?
About 100 square inches per person for mixed grilling, or 150 per rack of ribs. Four people are comfortable on 450-570 square inches; eight or more want 900 square inches. Size for your normal cook rather than your biggest, because a larger chamber costs pellets on every cook. Table: what size do I need.
What is the best pellet grill for the money?
The Z Grills 600D2 on pure value — 572 square inches with a PID controller under $400. If you want an app and more capacity, the Pit Boss Navigator 850. See the value ranking.
Is Pit Boss or Traeger better?
Pit Boss gives you more cooking area, a bigger hopper, direct-flame searing and a five-year warranty. Traeger gives you a far better app, the best cleanup system and stronger resale. Neither is wrong — it depends which you are buying. See Pit Boss vs Traeger.
Are Z Grills any good?
Yes. They offer the best temperature control per dollar on the market, with PID 3.0 on grills in the low $300s, and they include covers and probes other brands charge for. The trade-offs are no WiFi, a thinner support network and weak resale. See are Z Grills any good.
What is the difference between a pellet grill and a pellet smoker?
Mostly nothing — manufacturers use both names for the same machine. Where there is a real difference it is format: a barrel reaches 450-500°F and can grill, while a vertical cabinet tops out around 420°F but drops to 130°F, holds five racks and carries a much bigger hopper. See the explainer.
Do I need WiFi on a pellet grill?
Only if you cook from indoors. WiFi does not make the grill cook better. If all you want is a phone alert when the meat is ready, a wireless meat thermometer does that on any grill for a fraction of the price. See thermometers.
Can you sear a steak on a pellet grill?
Properly on a Pit Boss with the Flame Broiler slider, which exposes direct flame. Poorly on an indirect-only grill capped at 450-500°F — but sear grates, cast iron or a reverse sear close most of the gap. See can you sear.
How much do pellets cost to run?
Roughly 1 to 1.5 lb an hour at smoking temperatures and 2 to 3 lb an hour grilling hot. A brisket uses about 15 lb. The biggest saving available is buying 40 lb bags rather than 18 lb ones, which roughly halves the cost per pound. See cost per cook.
How many watts does a pellet grill use?
The igniter is the only meaningful draw and it runs for a few minutes; after that you are powering a small fan and a duty-cycled auger motor. The only grill in our registry publishing a figure is the Pit Boss 150 at 71W on 12V DC. Electricity is negligible next to pellet cost. See electricity cost.
What are the best wood pellets for smoking?
A competition blend (maple, hickory and cherry) as a do-everything bag; Pit Boss Competition Blend in 40 lb for the best cost per pound; Lumber Jack if you want a published wood ratio. Any brand works in any grill. See best wood pellets.
Can I use any brand of pellets in my grill?
Yes. Every brand we cover states compatibility with all pellet grills — Traeger pellets work in a Pit Boss and vice versa. Brand matching is marketing, not a technical requirement.
Why does my pellet grill temperature keep swinging?
Ash in the burn pot restricting the airflow combustion needs, nine times out of ten. Let the grill go fully cold and vacuum the pot before suspecting the controller. See losing heat.
Why will my pellet grill not light?
Check in order: are pellets reaching the burn pot (auger primed and turning), is the pot clear of old unburned pellets and ash, and only then suspect the igniter. The igniter is effectively a consumable and the most commonly replaced part. See common problems.
How often should I clean a pellet grill?
Scrape the grates every cook while warm. Empty the grease tray every two or three cooks. Vacuum the burn pot every three to five. Full interior clean every 15-20 cooks. See how to clean one.
How long do pellet grills last?
Five to ten years if covered, cleaned and fed dry pellets; three to five left out in the weather. Weather drives lifespan far more than use does, and the three parts that wear (igniter, auger motor, fan) are all cheap. See how long they last.
Why does my pellet grill not make much smoke?
Because pellet grills burn efficiently, and efficiency means less smoke — output drops noticeably above about 250°F. Cook at 225°F instead of 275°F (free and most effective), add a smoke tube for a few dollars, or use a stronger wood. See the smoke setting explained.
Are pellet grills allowed in apartments?
Frequently not. Many leases and local fire codes prohibit open-flame cooking on balconies regardless of fuel, and a pellet grill is an open-flame appliance even though it plugs in. Check your lease, your fire code and your building rules first. See apartment and balcony rules.
Do you test the grills you review?
No, and we say so everywhere. We compare published specifications, track live prices daily, read warranty and support terms, and pass on owner reports labeled as owner reports. The full method, including what we deliberately do not do, is on how we pick.
