Where cheap stops being a bargain
The floor is a PID controller and a published warranty. Every grill on this page has both. Below that line you are buying a dial board with a wide temperature swing from a brand with no parts supply, and the money you saved is the money you will spend replacing it.
The cheapest honest entry: a tabletop
The Z Grills 200A is a 25 x 20 x 13 inch tabletop grill with 202 square inches, an 8 lb hopper and a full PID V3.0 controller. Z Grills rates the hopper at around ten hours of low-and-slow and quotes +/-20°F accuracy. For a balcony, an RV, a boat or a small patio that is a genuinely complete pellet cooker at the lowest price anyone sells one.
202 square inches feeds two or three people. Be clear-eyed about that before buying — it is not a small full-size grill, it is a tabletop. If you need to feed four, the 550B2 is the cheapest full-size grill we trust.
The specifications to check before you buy anything cheaper
If you find a pellet grill below these picks and are tempted, check these five things on the listing. If any one is missing, that is the answer.
| Check | What good looks like | What a red flag looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Controller | States PID, or a named controller version | Just says 'digital' or 'auto temp' |
| Warranty | A stated number of years | No warranty mentioned anywhere |
| Hopper capacity | A figure in pounds | Not stated |
| Temperature range | A published low and high | Only a maximum |
| Parts availability | Brand sells augers, fans, igniters | No parts listings exist |
That list is not theoretical. The three parts that fail on a pellet grill are the auger motor, the induction fan and the igniter. On Pit Boss, Traeger, Z Grills and Camp Chef you can buy all three. On an unbranded grill you often cannot, and a dead $40 fan writes off the whole machine.
What cheap does not cost you
It is worth saying the positive case plainly, because most buying guides only ever push upward. A cheap pellet grill with a PID board does not produce worse food. It holds 225°F, it burns the same pellets, and the ribs come off the same. What you lose is convenience, capacity and cold-weather margin — not flavor.
One claim we will not make: that any of these grills is “built like” a more expensive one. We have not handled them. The specifications are published and cited; the conclusions about what those specifications mean are ours.

Questions people actually ask
What is the cheapest pellet smoker worth buying?
The Z Grills 200A tabletop if 202 sq in is enough for you, or the 550B2 if you need a full-size grill. Both have PID control and a three-year warranty, which is the floor we would not go below.
Are cheap pellet grills a waste of money?
Not above the PID threshold. Below it, often yes — a wide temperature swing on a long cook is genuinely frustrating, and brands at that level rarely sell replacement parts.
How small is too small?
Roughly 100 sq in per person for mixed grilling. 202 sq in is two to three people; 450-570 sq in comfortably feeds four. Full table in what size pellet grill do I need.
