Pellet Grills
The Best Budget Pellet Grills
Budget does not have to mean compromised. There is one specification that separates a cheap grill worth owning from one that will annoy you, and it is not the price.

The one line that matters
The difference between a budget pellet grill worth owning and one that is not is the controller. A PID board measures, predicts and auto-tunes the auger and fan; a simple dial board just feeds on a timer. Buy above the PID threshold and a cheap grill cooks like an expensive one. Buy below it and you will fight the temperature on every long cook.
That threshold now sits remarkably low. Z Grills put PID 3.0 on grills in the low $300s, which is why four of the five picks on this page are theirs. Five years ago this advice would have been “spend more”. Today it is “spend enough, which is less than you think”.
What budget actually costs you
Being specific about the compromises is the only honest way to write a budget roundup, so here they are, in the order they will affect you:
| Compromise | How much it matters | Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Hopper capacity | A lot, if you smoke overnight | None — this is the one you cannot fix. Buy capacity if you need it. |
| No WiFi | Only if you cook from indoors | A wireless meat thermometer gives you alerts for far less |
| 450°F ceiling | Only for steak crust and pizza | Sear grates or a cast iron griddle, for a fraction of the upgrade price |
| Thinner steel | In cold weather, and over years if uncovered | A cover, always. A thermal blanket in deep winter. |
Notice that three of the four have cheap workarounds and one does not. Hopper capacity is the compromise to take seriously. Everything else you can buy your way around for less than the price step to the next grill up.
The budget setup we would actually build
If someone handed us a fixed budget and asked for the best possible pellet-grilling setup rather than the best possible grill, this is what we would buy:
- The Z Grills 600D2 — 572 sq in with a PID board.
- A cover, because weather kills budget grills, not price.
- A cheap instant-read thermometer. The grill’s probe tells you about one spot; a good hand thermometer tells you the truth.
- A smoke tube, which costs single-digit dollars and adds more perceived smoke than any grill upgrade at this level.
- A 40 lb bag of competition-blend pellets rather than two 20 lb premium bags.
That setup beats a bare mid-range grill at the same total spend, and it is not a close call.

Questions people actually ask
What is the best budget pellet grill?
The Z Grills 600D2 — 572 sq in and a PID V3.0 controller for under $400, with a storage cabinet and a side shelf. It holds temperature as well as grills costing twice as much.
What is a PID controller and why does it matter?
PID stands for proportional-integral-derivative. In practice it means the controller watches the temperature, predicts where it is heading and adjusts the auger feed and fan speed continuously, rather than feeding pellets on a fixed timer. The result is a much narrower swing — which you notice most on long, low cooks.
Are cheap pellet grills reliable?
The parts that fail on any pellet grill are the auger motor, the induction fan and the igniter, and all three are inexpensive and replaceable on every brand here. What kills a cheap grill is weather. Covered and cleaned, a budget grill lasts years.
What is the best budget pellet grill with WiFi?
There is not a good one. WiFi appears reliably from around $650, and the budget models that claim it tend to have the worst apps. A wireless meat thermometer gives you phone alerts for far less — see thermometers.
